Abstract. In the context in which high performance computing (HPC) is recognized as a key factor for economic growth and development, this article is reviewing the present state of delivering computing as a service by small and medium companies. Example cases are briefly presented and the benefits as well as the pitfalls of such services are highlighted. An important step in overcoming some of the barriers in the wider utilization of HPC was the development of dedicated WEBportal for easy access of non-specialized users. Dedicated WEB applications have evolved in all fields including that of computational economics, which is briefly presented in this paper.
